i turned the gps to location instead of 911 only but still it wont work once in the maps application. do i need to buy VZ navigator?

Nope. Mine works fine. Are you inside? Or at least perhaps a heavily covered building? That can prevent the GPS signal from reaching you. Mine takes several minutes inside my house to connect to the GPS satellites, whereas in my car it only takes a few seconds.
Also, when you open BlackBerry Maps are you pressing "Start GPS Navigation"? That's how you tell it to search for a satellite.
