I was wondering if after buying a Magellan navigation unit for my car, if there would be additional costs, such as subscription fees? If there are, are there any other units that don't have a subscription fee?

There's no fee at all just to get the satellite signals and map your way to your destination. There are services such as traffic updates, like accidents or construction or whatever that's provided by AAA and have a subscription fee. there are also map updates that come out sometimes (the map updates suck) that cost about $ 80 a pop.
I think most other units are set up pretty similar, but I own a magellan so i speak from experience about that brand.
