Q&A: What year did BMW start putting navigation systems in the 3 series?

I'm wondering, for the 3-series, what year did gps navigation systems start getting added? And in what particular models (325, 330, etc.).

I had a 1999 or 2000 (from memory) 323i and it had a basic gps. It was a mono (orange/black) screen and provided street names and directions but no maps. The antenna was built into the dashboard.

The BMW 3 series sedans where available with the option of the Navigation system for 1999-2001 pre-facelifted models. The Navigation system for these years where quite small however when the 2002-2005 BMW 325i & 330i sedan and coupes where face-lifted BMW decided to revise the interior cabin and gave the 3 series the newer version of BMW's Navigation system which you can find on some 2002-2005 older BMW models like the X5, 3 series & older 5 series . The 2002 Facelifted BMW 3 series sedan & coupe received the updated Navigation system which composed a long screen and split map display, which was the manufacturers new infotainment system.
