I think that the mercantilism system and navigation laws were responsible for the conflict between Britain and its American colonies, but then again it could also be the ineptness of parliamentary leadership, the colonists' behavior, the high-handedness of King George III, or the actions of British officials in the colonies. What do you think and why?

If you are writing an essay, then going with a thesis regarding the mercantilist system seems to me to be the best. I like it because it gets away from the usual stuff. It also makes the point that problems were deep-seated and systemic, build into the nature of empire, not accidents or the result of personalities.
